Media Symbiosis

Televisions, Radios, Books, Films, Newspapers, Theatre, Magazines, Online News Portals, Internet (New Media) are the different kinds of media.

The word Symbiosis has been derived from biology. It is made up of two Greek words, Sym which means with and Biosis which means living. When these two different words are joined together they form symbiosis which means to live together. In biology, it is often taken as interaction between two different biological species.

When we talk about media symbiosis, we talk about different medium working together for each other’s benefit. For example, a book is a medium. It is transformed into a play and shown in a theatre. Then, a production house makes a movie based on the play. Again, a television company uses the movie for its operation time. Here, different media like book, theatre, film, television work with each other and gain benefit. The book’s writer is paid by the theatre, the theater is then paid by the film company and then they receive money from television. Along with monetary transaction, these media get promotional advantage from each other.

In Nepal’s Context, Kantipur is an Example. Same or similar news is given by Kantipur Television, Radio Kantipur, Kantipur Daily and Ekantipur.com. All of them are different kind of Media i.e. TV, Radio, Newspaper and Internet Website. However, source is same for the news. One reporter involved in any of these media inside the Kantipur conglomeration provides news for all the media or they all share the news or raw material between themselves to save time, money and human power.

In global context, MTV and BBC are the examples. A record company provides MTV a music video which it wants to promote. MTV in return gets material for some of its operational time. Similarly, a radio might use MTV as a reference for its new release i.e. the music video. Here, three different media are involved .So the chain can be called a three dimensional symbiosis.

In conclusion, Media Symbiosis is an act an act of different media of helping each other for each others’ benefit, advantage and gain. It helps all the media involved for their survival and growth.
